Milcom Blog Logs 26 Nov 2014 - Btown NC

Decided to head down low (frequency wise) this morning and see which US Coast Guard DGPS stations I could rustle up for the breakfast hour here on the radio ranch.

Eastern US DGPS Coverage Map (courtesy US Coast Guard)

Here is a list of those station I monitored until the sun came up to tamper down those LF signals.

(Receiver Icom IC-7200, 80m G5RV antenna, Multipsk decoder, dates and times are UTC)

These were interesting stations to decode and Multipsk made it a snap. You can get your copy of Multipsk at http://f6cte.free.fr/index_anglais.htm. Th program is free but there are some "professional" modes that will only decode for five minutes at a time unless you register. It is well worth the registration to have those mods which includes the decoding of DGPS signals.

Will try these again at several different hours to see what new ones I can log.

Kosmos-2499: Is it a spy or an assassin... or both?

Blog Editor's Note: Given the ramp up of Russian military operations in Europe and Asia, Radio Sputnik replacing Voice of Russia now on the air with Cold War style propaganda, and now Cold War style space activities, I believe the Russian have reset our relations. If they start operating independently again in space, well those of us who lived through the last Cold War may live to see another one regardless what American politicians have to say on the situation.

Object 2014-28E – Space junk or Russian satellite killer?
By Sam Jones, Defense and Security Editor

It is a tale that could have come from the cold war. A mysterious object launched by the Russian military is being tracked by western space agencies, stoking fears over the revival of a defunct Kremlin project to destroy satellites.

For the past few weeks, amateur astronomers and satellite-trackers in Russia and in the west have followed the unusual manoeuvers of Object 2014-28E (now IDed as Cosmos 2499-LVH), watching it guide itself towards other Russian space objects. The pattern appeared to culminate last weekend in a rendezvous with the remains of the rocket stage that launched it.

The object had originally been classed as space debris, propelled into orbit as part of a Russian rocket launch in May to add three Rodnik communications satellites to an existing military constellation. The U.S. military is now tracking it under the NORAD catalog number 39765.

Cosmos 2499, NORAD ID: 39765, Int'l Code: 2014-028E
Perigee: 1,158.5 km, Apogee: 1,510.7 km, Inclination: 82.4 °
Period: 112.2 minutes, Semi major axis: 7705 km
Launch date: May 23, 2014

And finally here are some additional details on Cosmos 2499 courtesy of the Zarya Space website at http://www.zarya.info/Diaries/Launches/Launches.php?year=2014

Cosmos 2499  2014-028E NORAD Catalog #39765
A small satellite with orbit changing capability. Possibly, but speculatively, an inspector satellite with its own Briz-KM rocket body (2014-028D/39764) as a target. Detected by US tracking sensors and originally catalogued as debris, it was not included in early announcements of the launch. Early 2014 July - started a series of manoeuvers to reduce the separation in orbit planes between itself and the Briz-KM.
2014 November 8/9 it matched planes with the rocket and manoeuvered alongside it.

Russia flexing military muscle with expanded bomber patrols around North America

In this Aug. 7, 2008 file photo, Russia's strategic bomber Tu-160 or White Swan, the largest supersonic bomber in the world, seen at Engels Air Base near Saratov, about 700 kilometers (450 miles) southeast of Moscow, Russia. (AP Photo/Misha Japaridze)
Blog Editor's Note: With the start this week of Russia's new propaganda arm "Radio Sputnik" streaming on the Internet, which according to the station has replaced the Voice of Russia, the on-going conflict in Ukraine, provocative flights around Scandinavia by the Russian Long Range Air Force and now this below. Mikhail S. Gorbachev may be right that we are near or at the Cold War cranking up again (http://www.foxnews.com/world/2014/11/09/gorbachev-warns-new-cold-war-at-ceremony-marking-berlin-wall-fall/). Wonder when we will see Radio Sputnik show up in the shortwave broadcast bands? Time to keep an ear on the Russian Long Range Air Force freqs. More to follow on that on this blog.

From AP and CBS News press reports:

In a show of military muscle amid tensions with the West, Russia will send long-range strategic bombers on regular patrol missions across the globe, from the Arctic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico,  Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Wednesday.

The announcement by Shoigu came as NATO's Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg
accused Russia of sending fresh troops and tanks into eastern Ukraine.

Shoigu said Russian long-range bombers will conduct flights along Russian borders and over the Arctic Ocean. He said, "In the current situation we have to maintain military presence in the western Atlantic and eastern Pacific, as well as the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico."

Shoigu would not say how frequent the patrol missions would be or offer any other specifics, but he noted that the increasing pace and duration of flights would require stronger maintenance efforts and that relevant directives have been issued to industries.

He said the Russian air force's long-range planes also will conduct "reconnaissance missions to monitor foreign powers' military activities and maritime communications."
A senior U.S. military official said Russia has not previously flown actual bomber patrols over the Gulf of Mexico, including during the Cold War.

The bomber patrol flights have resumed under President Vladimir Putin's tenure, and they have become even more frequent in recent weeks, with NATO reporting a spike in Russian military flights over the Black, Baltic and North seas as well as the Atlantic Ocean.

Earlier this year, Shoigu said that Russia plans to expand its worldwide military presence by seeking permission for navy ships to use ports in Latin America, Asia and elsewhere for replenishing supplies and doing maintenance. He said the military was conducting talks with Algeria, Cyprus, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Cuba, Seychelles, Vietnam and Singapore.

Shoigu said Russia also is talking to some of those countries about allowing long-range bombers to use their air bases for refuelling .

60 AMW KC-10 A/A Frequencies

For my west coast readers, Travis AFB 60 AMW KC-10A tankers have two VHF interplane (Air/Air) frequencies assigned to them. Keep an ear out for activity on
138.875 (primary) and 139.925 (secondary) MHz.

Russia's 'close military encounters' with Europe documented

Russian military flights into Europe have increased over the past year
The growing strains between Russia and the West prompted by the Ukraine crisis are now sending ripples of military tension across Europe.

NATO has responded to Russia's incursions into Ukraine by stepping up its ties with Kiev and bolstering air patrols and exercises with its eastern and central European members.

Russia in turn has decided to pursue a more active, many might say a more aggressive, military policy of its own, returning to the sorts of flights and activities from the Cold War years that were used to regularly test out NATO defenses.

The European Leadership Network, a London-based think tank, has produced a detailed study of this more assertive Russian activity.

Close encounters

Entitled Dangerous Brinkmanship: Close Military Encounters Between Russia and the West in 2014, it chronicles almost 40 specific incidents that have occurred during the past eight months.

It says these "add up to a highly disturbing picture of violations of national airspace, emergency scrambles, narrowly avoided mid-air collisions, close encounters at sea and other dangerous actions happening on a regular basis over a very wide geographical area".

From Naval Air Forces, Public Affairs

SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- The Navy made aviation history Nov. 3 as an F-35C Lightning II carrier variant Joint Strike Fighter conducted its first arrested landing aboard an aircraft carrier off the coast of San Diego.

Navy test pilot Cmdr. Tony Wilson landed F-35C test aircraft CF-03 at 12:18 p.m. aboard USS Nimitz's (CVN 68) flight deck.

The arrested landing is part of initial at-sea Developmental Testing I (DT-I) for the F-35C, which commenced Nov. 3 and is expected to last two weeks.

"Today is a landmark event in the development of the F-35C," said Wilson, a Navy test pilot with Air Test and Evaluation Squadron (VX) 23. "It is the culmination of many years of hard work by a talented team of thousands. I'm very excited to see America's newest aircraft on the flight deck of her oldest aircraft carrier, the USS Nimitz."

Commander, Naval Air Forces, Vice Adm. David H. Buss, was aboard Nimitz to witness the milestone event.

"What a historic day today is for Naval Aviation. With the first traps of the F-35C Lightning II aboard an aircraft carrier, we begin the integration of the next generation of warfighting capability into our carrier-based air wings," said Buss. "This important milestone is yet another indicator of Naval Aviation's ongoing evolution to meet future threats and remain central to our future Navy and National Defense Strategy."
DT-I is the first of three at-sea test phases planned for the F-35C. During DT-I, the test team from the F-35 Lightning II Pax River Integrated Test Force (ITF) has scheduled two F-35C test aircraft from Naval Air Station Patuxent River in Patuxent River, Maryland to perform a variety of operational maneuvers, including various catapult takeoffs and arrested landings. ITF flight test operations also encompass general maintenance and fit tests for the aircraft and support equipment, as well as simulated maintenance operations.

As with the initial testing of any new aircraft, the goal is to collect environmental data through added instrumentation to measure the F-35C's integration to flight deck operations and to further define the F-35C's operating parameters aboard the aircraft carrier.

The ITF test team will analyze data obtained during flight test operations, conduct a thorough assessment of how well the F-35C operated in the shipboard environment, and advise the Navy to make any adjustments necessary to ensure that the fifth-generation fighter is fully capable and ready to deploy to the fleet in 2018.

"Our F-35 integrated test team has done an amazing job preparing for today. This will be one landing out of thousands more that will happen over the next few decades," said Lt. Gen. Chris Bogdan, F-35 Program Executive Officer. "For months, we've been working with the Nimitz crew, Naval Air Forces, and our industry partners, Lockheed Martin and Pratt & Whitney, as well as their suppliers, to prepare and train for this event. We plan on learning a lot during this developmental test and will use that knowledge to make the naval variant of the F-35 an even more effective weapons platform."
The F-35C combines advanced stealth with fighter speed and agility, fused targeting, cutting-edge avionics, advanced jamming, network-enabled operations and advanced sustainment. With a broad wingspan, reinforced landing gear, ruggedized structures and durable coatings, the F-35C is designed to stand up to harsh shipboard conditions while delivering a lethal combination of fighter capabilities to the fleet.

The F-35C will enhance the flexibility, power projection, and strike capabilities of carrier air wings and joint task forces and will complement the capabilities of the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, which currently serves as the Navy's premier strike fighter.

By 2025, the Navy's aircraft carrier-based air wings will consist of a mix of F-35C, F/A-18E/F Super Hornets, EA-18G Growlers electronic attack aircraft, E-2D Hawkeye battle management and control aircraft, MH-60R/S helicopters and Carrier Onboard Delivery logistics aircraft.

The successful recovery of the F-35C represents a step forward in the development of the Navy's next generation fighter and reinforces Navy-industry partnership goals to deliver the operational aircraft to the fleet in 2018.

By Commander, U.S. Third Fleet Public Affairs

SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- The guided missile destroyer USS Sampson (DDG 102) departed Oct. 31 on an independent deployment to the Western Pacific Ocean.
The ship and crew of more than 300 Sailors, assigned to Destroyer Squadron Two Three (DESRON) 23, will conduct various presence operations and goodwill activities with partner nations.
Sampson is a multi-mission ship with anti-air warfare, anti-submarine warfare and anti-surface warfare surface combatant capabilities; designed to operate independently or with an associated strike group.
"I am very proud of our Sailors who have worked extremely hard over the past year to ensure Sampson is ready for deployment," said Cmdr. Steven Foley, Sampson's commanding officer. "They have truly embraced the spirit of pride and professionalism and look forward to representing our Navy's missions."
Detachment Seven from the "Magicians" of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron Three Five (HSM-35) will embark Sampson during the deployment.
"It is a real privilege to be the officer in charge of HSM-35's first deploying detachment," said Lt. Cmdr. Chris Laufman, HSM-35, Detachment 7's officer in charge. "Our maintenance team and aircrews have worked really hard to prepare, and we are very excited to be embarked on such a great ship. We are excited to represent all 'Magicians' on the squadron's inaugural deployment."
Sampson is the fourth U.S. destroyer named after Rear Adm. William Thomas Sampson, whose naval service lasted from 1857 until 1902, including command of the North Atlantic Station during the Spanish-American War in 1898.
The ship is homeported in San Diego and is part of Naval Surface Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet and U.S. 3rd Fleet.
U.S. 3rd Fleet leads naval forces in the Eastern Pacific from the West Coast of North America to the international date line and provides the realistic, relevant training necessary for an effective global Navy.

Task Group Exercise Comes to a Close, Ends with Success

An MV-22 Osprey assigned to the Greyhawks of Marine Medium Tiltroter Squadron (VMM) 161 lifts off the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68). Nimitz, along with Canadian, Japanese and other U.S. ships is underway conducting a task group exercise (TGEX) to train units that will deploy independently. TGEX improves cooperation, readiness and the capability to respond quickly in various situations in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Aiyana S. PACIFIC OCEAN (NNS) -- Canadian, Japanese and U.S. ships completed a two-week long Task Group Exercise (TGEX) Oct. 31 off the coast of Southern California.
The exercise, led by U.S. 3rd Fleet gave Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 15 the opportunity to conduct and evaluate training across multiple warfare areas for Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 11, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 23, Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 11, aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68), guided-missile cruisers USS Lake Champlain (CG 57) and USS Chosin (CG 65), guided-missile destroyers USS Milius (DDG 69), USS Paul Hamilton (DDG 60), USS Kidd (DDG 100), USS Pinckney (DDG 91) and USS William P. Lawrence (DDG 110), littoral combat ships USS Independence (LCS 2) and USS Fort Worth (LCS 3), Royal Canadian Navy Halifax-class frigates HMCS Calgary (FFH 335) and HMCS Winnipeg (FFH 338), Kingston-class coastal defense vessels HMCS Brandon (MM 710) and HMCS Yellowknife (MM 706), and Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JS) Teruzuki (DD 116)

"The U.S. Navy uses exercises like TGEX to strengthen maritime relationships with partner nations," said Capt. Patrick Keyes, commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet, assistant chief of staff for plans, policy, training and readiness. "Additionally, TGEX gave four independent deployers the opportunity to be assessed across multiple warfare areas and provided an opportunity for ships not getting certified to get valuable training, necessary during their training cycle."

Milius, Paul Hamilton and Fort Worth Crews 103 and 104 used TGEX as their final opportunity to certify prior to deployment.

TGEX was a rare opportunity to cultivate partnerships across Pacific fleets.
"Our goal was to improve tactical skill," Japanese foreign liaison officer Lt. Cmdr. Kohei Sueki said. "We would also like to enhance regional understanding between the Japanese and the U.S. and Canadian Navies."

Sueki added that the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force sought to increase maritime war fighting capability and international relations through their participation in TGEX.
"Japanese, U.S. and Canadian ships coming together is not something that happens often," Lt. Vincent Pellerin, Canadian foreign liaison officer said. "We hoped to foster better international relationships and learn how to work well with other fleets."
Joint, inter agency and international relationships strengthen U.S. 3rd Fleet's ability to respond to crises and protect the collective maritime interests of the U.S. and its allies and partners.
