Where in the world is AE0463?

Just as we all settle in to this North Korea mess, I have another Mode-S hex code mystery.

While working up my Mode-S intercepts for this blog and updating my call sign db, I noticed something a bit odd. On 6 Aug 2017 here on the radio ranch I caught Hex Code AE0463 overflying the area. When you cross that hex you will see most all have it coming back to a US Navy C-2A 162148 assigned to VRC-40 based out of Norfolk.

But the story takes an even stranger twist. AE0463 is being actively reported by mil monitors in the UK to the same serial Mode-S c/s RG01, a C-2A flying with the air wing on board the USS George H.W. Bush, currently operating in the eastern Atlantic and participating in a major Euro exercise.

That has to be one fast flying C-2A cod aircraft looking at all the intercepts.

So is 162148 (AE0463) in the eastern Atlantic or is it stateside?

NAVAL BASE GUAM , Guam -- Commander, Task Force (CTF) 75 successfully completed communications systems tests using high-frequency (HF) radio waves to broadcast voice and data 6,050 miles from Naval Base Guam to Port Hueneme, California, July 27, 2017.

The assessment tested the capabilities of expeditionary forces to use HF waves to deliver data over the Pacific. HF has become a viable alternative for military forces when more common forms of communication, such as satellites, are unavailable.

“In this particular back-up plan, we tested our ability to talk, and we were able to send text to one of our units that is across the Pacific Ocean,” said Lt. Cmdr. Timothy Carmon, a communications planner temporarily assigned to CTF-75. “The transmissions and receptions are not as fast as IP services, however we were still able to communicate in a timely manner with the distant end.”

Utilizing the assets of CTF-75’s Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 1, the command configured its antennae to broadcast to California. Once a successful voice transmission was received, communication directors at Navy Expeditionary Combat Command Pacific requested that CTF-75 try to send a data file.

“These data files allow us to save time,” said Electronics Technician 2nd Class Anthony Juarez, a communications supervisor assigned to NMCB 1. “We can send general diagrams, fire plans and points of interest. Instead of trying to verbally describe something, they [the recipient] have a graphic or a picture that gives them a better idea of the situation.”

Common communication devices used by the U.S. military incorporate satellites. CTF-75 has been testing HF systems in the case of satellite communication failure. HF is a frequency wave broadcast that is transmitted around the curvature of the Earth. Unlike other forms of frequencies, such as very-high frequencies and ultra-high frequencies, the transmission is not distorted by terrain or physical obstructions.

“We may not always have access to operational equipment or the latest assets, but as communicators we should have a backup plan that is ready to be executed,” said Carmon.

Guam is located in the western region of the Pacific. Having an HF range of 6,000 miles is equivalent to broadcasting from Japan to the U.S., or oppositely, from Japan to the middle of Africa. During this most recent test, CTF-75 was also able to establish communications with Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit 1 in Hawaii.

“We can hop our communications from island to island,” said Juarez. “This test gave us the opportunity to know we can push our system to the absolute max from Guam. There are definitely different systems out there, but our system is really efficient at long-range HF. As new radios are incorporated in the Navy expeditionary community, I have no doubt it will get faster, more reliable and easier to set up.”

CTF-75 is currently testing its communication abilities with subordinate commands which include Seabee units, riverine squadrons, cargo handlers, explosive ordnance disposal technicians, and expeditionary intelligence forces.

“This achievement was an important step in an effort to increase our capabilities to be prepared to execute missions in austere locations around the globe,” said Carmon. “Our expeditionary commanders may never need to communicate over a few thousand kilometers, but if the need arises our communicators will be able to provide the connection for that commander.”

CTF-75 is the primary expeditionary task force responsible for the planning and execution of coastal riverine operations, explosive ordnance disposal, diving engineering and underwater construction in the U.S. 7th fleet area of operations.

Six bomb threats have been called in to Navy bases in Hampton Roads today

Naval Station Norfolk

By Courtney Mabeus The Virginian-Pilot

An early morning bomb threat at Naval Station Norfolk has been followed by five others called in to Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek in Virginia Beach, the Navy said Wednesday.

The most recent threat came at 1:11 p.m. against the dock landing ship USS Oak Hill, which also was targeted Monday in a separate incident. Base security is responding and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service is investigating, the Navy said.

The Navy reported a threat called in at 9:20 a.m. to the dock landing ship USS Whidbey Island at Little Creek, which was cleared around 12:30 p.m. That was followed by a 9:55 a.m. threat made to the Admiral Joel T. Boone Branch Medical Clinic, which was evacuated but reopened following a search of the building, the Navy said.

At about 10:30 a.m., another threat was called in against dock landing ship USS Gunston Hall, which was cleared at 2:52 p.m., base spokesman Scott Mohr said. Pier 16 and a morale, welfare and recreation marina and the installation's harbor remained locked down. The Personnel Support Detachment on base received a threat at 10:55. That facility returned to normal operations before 11:30 a.m.

In Monday's incident against Oak Hill, someone called in a threat around 2:30 p.m. and hung up, said Lt. Michael Hatfield, a spokesman for Expeditionary Strike Group 2. It was determined to be a prank call, Hatfield said.

Base security and fire and emergency personnel responded to all locations Wednesday. Those with additional questions were asked to call the Public Affairs Office at 757-462-8425.

Wednesday's threats at the joint expeditionary base followed another early morning bomb threat miles away at Naval Station Norfolk.

Piers were locked down for several hours after the 6 a.m. call to the base's 911 line while an explosive ordnance disposal unit searched a suspicious vehicle near Pier 14 after a military dog detected something, base spokeswoman Kelly Wirfel said. It's unclear what the dog detected and a vehicle description was not immediately available.

Wirfel didn't immediately respond to calls and emails seeking further information.

The aircraft carriers USS Abraham Lincoln and USS Harry S. Truman are docked at that pier.
The piers were reopened around 11 a.m. after an all-clear was given.

What remained unclear was whether the bomb threat and finding in the vehicle were related. It's also unknown if the threats called in to the two bases were related.

NCIS is investigating, said Beth Baker, a spokeswoman for Navy Region Mid-Atlantic. An NCIS spokesman could not be immediately reached Wednesday.

US Army to modernize existing CONUS land mobile radio systems

Key Points

  • The five-year effort will link all US Army bases
  • The army wants to move from proprietary systems to open standards
Harris and Motorola Solutions will each upgrade and modernise the existing US Army land mobile radio system infrastructure, as well as replace systems with the latest technology.

Each company received an award of USD461.246 million to update the 63 army installations within the United States. The bases resemble cities, equipped with emergency services, similar to those found in municipal settings, Carlos Whaley, director for federal sales for Harris Public Safety and Professional Communications (PSPC), told Jane’s.

“These 63 army bases are like islands, they have communications systems that are not connected outside of the base; so for example at Fort Benning, Georgia, they can talk to Fort Benning, Georgia, and that is it,” Whaley said.

HF Aero OR Spectrum Hole - 8986 kHz

I have been working on military and federal spectrum holes for years in my old Monitoring Times Milcom column and via post on this blog. For the most part this involved the VHF/UHF military and federal spectrum here in the United States.

Now I have uncovered my first HF military frequency spectrum hole --  8986.0 kHz. Based on the known U.S. DoD Aero Off Route band plan, this should be a U.S. Air Force assignment.

If you monitor anything on this frequency I would appreciate any confirmed intercepts on this frequency sent to the email address in the masthead.

Russian 6th-generation fighter will employ powerful lasers to burn enemy missile

By L. Todd Wood

ANALYSIS/OPINION:

Air-to-ground or air-to-air missiles have one thing in common — they have a seeker head, or targeting system on the missile that uses radar or heat-seeking technology to find and lead the weapon to the target to destroy it. The Russian defense industry says it will deploy powerful lasers on its new sixth-generation fighter that will be able to “burn” enemy homing systems on projectiles fired in their direction, to make them unable to hit a target.

“We already have laser protection systems installed on aircraft and helicopters, and now we are talking about developments in the field of powered lasers that will be able to physically destroy attacking missiles’ homing heads. … Roughly speaking, we’ll be able to burn out ‘the eyes’ of missiles that ‘look at us.’ Naturally, such systems will be installed on sixth-generation aircraft as well,” said the Adviser to the First Deputy CEO of Radio-Electronic Technologies Group (KRET) Vladimir Mikheyev, reported Russian state news agency TASS.

Drone technology is also a high priority for the Russian defense industry. Manned aircraft flying alongside swarms of unmanned drones is a concept being developed on both sides of the Atlantic.
“One drone in a formation flight will carry microwave weapons, including guided electronic munitions while another drone will carry radio-electronic suppression and destruction means, and a third UAV will be armed with a set of standard weaponry. Each specific task is solved by different armaments,” Mr. Mikheyev added.

Microwave weapons will complement the laser components on manned aircraft also.
